The meaning of the word in agricultural activities can be defined as the environment where the roots grow and grow.
In different places in the world also may be used "Growing Media", "Potting Soil", "Plant Soil" names for the same meaning.
Basically, defined by the word Substrate, the environment is where the organism grows and enzymes work.
 
Substrate can only consist of minerals such as perlite, vermiculite, tuff and zeolite, as well as organic materials such as peat, cocopeat, compost, vermicompost. However, the ideal growing environment is obtained by mixing organic materials and minerals depending on the type of plant.
 
Substrates can be used for germination and rooting in trays or as a growing medium for all types of plants.
 
It can be used as a growing medium in soilless culture activities in growbags or directly filled into canals or gutters. In recent years, they are preferred especially for green roof applications too.
 
Substrate companies offer different types of products according to the proportion of raw materials in the mixture.
Each input added to the mix gives a different character and feature to the substrate. The characteristics that the plant needs, such as water holding capacity, air capacity, drainage capacity, cation exchange capacity, EC and pH levels, which vary according to the plant and climate are provided with these inputs.
